Tattoos: To ink or not to ink

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

By Liz Zuliani

Thinking of getting a tattoo? Before you book the ink appointment, there are a few things you should consider. Rescu. gives it to you straight so you won’t have any regrets.

Tattoos are such a popular topic these days. There are TV shows on tattooing such as LA Ink and Miami Ink hitting the airways, books on tattooing, and photographic exhibitions giving us insight into people, their tattoos and what they mean.

It seems as though everyone has a tattoo these days, so what’s the big deal? Because tattoos can be removed with laser treatments, the notion of “a tattoo is forever” has gone out the window. But do you really want to go there? And how do you know you won’t regret a tattoo after you get one?

Deciding on a body part

First, you should start by considering two things before you get inked: where you get one and what you get. You might fancy an ankle tattoo, but would it send the wrong message at work? Covering it up under pants might get tiresome after a while and completely eliminates strappy heels from your ‘work-robe’.

Think long-term
A design you chose at 18 may not be an accurate expression of who you are later in life. Boyfriend and girlfriend names are high risk. If you are considering inking your lover’s name on your arm, think about Angelina Jolie’s ‘Billy Bob’ tattoo or Johnny Depp’s ‘Winona Forever’ tat – they probably both went through a lot of pain to get rid of their past loves.

Be individual
When you’re picking a design, it’s really important to choose something that represents the real, individual and unique you. Try to stay away from fad and fashionable tattoos if you can, or you may end up with the same tattoo as every other person on the street. Watch out for designs and symbols that brand you and associate with popular sub-culture, especially if you plan for your tattoo to be visible to others in the workplace. If you’re a professional, what people think does matter, so don’t send the wrong message.

Getting rid of a tattoo
It hurts and costs a lot more to remove a tattoo then to get one done – especially if you go for colourful designs. Keep in mind, coloured ink is more difficult to break down with lasers than black ink and you may run the risk of scarring during the laser removal treatments.

People not only turn to tattoo removal because they regret their ink, but also to give them a new canvas. The good news is, there’s a more easily removable tattoo ink in the market, that’s available in Australia called Infinitink. Developed by a Harvard dermatology professor and medical science and engineering professor from Brown University, this high-tech tattoo ink is free from the heavy metals and toxins commonly used in other inks.

The makers also promise that it delivers premium quality and deep colours while being three to four times more removable than conventional tattoo ink. You’ll still have to go through the laser treatment process to remove your tattoo should you decide to, but you’ll need less sessions – which means less strain on the wallet.
