Many people relish the New Year as a chance to reinvent themselves, start afresh, awake renewed. Often, this goal is built to monumental proportions, toppling dramatically in the coming months as it becomes all too hard. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be! My 10 Steps to a Healthy New You are not only sustainable, but align harmoniously with the needs of your body – no pushing or struggling required! Returning to the basics and rekindling vitality is as easy as the following:
1. Get unstuck
Changes at home, challenges at work or in relationships can sap your willpower and leave you feeling stuck and frustrated! Realizing you’re stuck is the first step to recovery – the next is figuring out how to tackle it! “Unstuck” is a new app promoting personal growth for anyone who wants to live better every day. Have a look at https://www.unstuck.com/
2. Make a plan and stick to it!
Planning allows you to clear the debris and create a path towards a solution. Write down your goals & create a weekly timetable, identifying the tasks required to fulfil each step. Set a time limit for your plan by choosing realistic dates for completion.
3. Don’t take it personally
Wonderful words to live by, this is one of the Four Agreements as written by Don Miguel Ruiz. The other agreements are: ‘Be impeccable with your word’, ‘Don’t make assumptions’ and ‘Always do your best’!
4. Get present
The work of Eckhart Tolle, spiritual teacher and author of The Power Of Now, offers teachings and tools to create inner peace, bring presence into everyday life, find your purpose and balance ‘doing’ with ‘being’.
5. Old School Food Rules
Eat three square meals per day, stop snacking and eat what your mum fed you: meat & three veg! Constantly grazing on ready to eat convenient, sugary, carb-dense foods keeps you in a perpetual state of hunger without satisfaction, sick and deficient in nutrients. Read more about my food philosophy here.
6. Sunshine
Glorious sunshine yields Vitamin D, yet despite our reputation as the sun-drenched country we are still deficient! This important nutrient has a role to play in the prevention of everything from cancer to mental illness.
According to Dr Mercola, we need to expose about 40 percent of our entire body for approximately 10-20 minutes (depending on your skin type – fair skin only requires 10 minutes) to the sun, between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm when the sun is at its zenith (this has been the time of day we have all been told to avoid!). In this article, he outlines some simple rules to protect your skin from damage.
7. Water cure
Hydration is a fundamental foundation of health, backed by Dr Batmanghelidj’s years of research and investigation into why water works so well in keeping us healthy and pain-free. Quite simply, what is lost must be replaced. Through daily activities, the average person loses about 3- 4 litres of fluid per day in sweat, urine, exhaled air and bowel movements. As a general rule, 3% of your body weight per day = number of litres required for health with more required on extra hot days or if exercising. Drink quality, filtered tap water or spring water. 8. Brush
The skin is the largest organ of elimination in the body. New skin is made every 24 hours and eliminates approximately 1 kilogram of waste acids daily. Skin brushing removes the top old layer of the skin. If impurities cannot be eliminated, an accumulation of waste products in the tissues occurs, interfering with nourishment and oxygenation of cells. In addition, skin brushing stimulates and increases circulation in all underlying organs and tissues, especially in the small blood capillaries of your skin. It rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in the skin, contributes to healthier muscle tone and better distribution of fat deposits, eliminates cellulite and regulates body temperature.
Brush skin dry (before you shower) with a natural bristle brush the size of your hand with a detachable handle. Avoid nylon bristles as they are too harsh and may damage the skin. Individuals with sensitive and fragile skin best start with a very soft natural bristle brush.
