Marsha Golemac’s Top Ten Tips for Interior Decorating in Winter on Any Budget
1. It might be an obvious one, but throws and blankets are the simplest way to dress up a space for the colder months and also versatile and inexpensive. If you have $150 to spend for a quick touch up – this is your answer. It is an easy stylistic touch and can bring a neutral bed or couch to life.
2. Natural fibres such as sheepskins are high impact and although they aren’t for everyone, they really do give an instant winter feel.
3. Layer your rugs. Whether you have floorboards, tiles or concrete floors, rugs are an essential accessory to keep you warmer under foot – but layering them over each other adds additional texture and warmth. It also gives you the opportunity to explore different materials and colours which will in turn inspire you to think creatively in other areas of the space.
4. Mirrors can sometimes be neglected – they are seen more so as a necessity that you put in a corner but sometimes they can really be the star of the show. Not only can they look great but they also increase existing light. Place one across the room, opposite to where you have a lamp, the reflection will provide that extra bit of warmth to the room.
5. Drapes can look dull but they can also look grand. When choosing them consider the material first then the colour. Look for a material that has weight with a smooth texture. They are great for insulating and adding a luxurious element.
6. Floor and table lamps are atmospheric angels as they provide the inconsistent light that your average ceiling light cannot. If you have dimmers then you’re covered. However, a reading lamp will still add that little bit extra to the overall atmosphere. If looking for lamps, do your research. Invest in a lamp that you will love forever and one that can work in other areas of your home incase you decide to switch things up one day. Though, candles of course are another option if you’re not ready to spend. Instead of creating a candle cluster, buy two really special ones that smell super tasty and place them in two separate areas of the room.
7. Add metallic accessories. Polished brass and copper Home wares are easy to find these days and can add a reflective warmth amongst a restrained palette.
8. Cosy up with aged and natural surfaces – paginated brown and tan leathers and timber elements. This doesn’t mean you need to buy a new sofa. Cushions and foots stools are available in leather too and could be all you need to have a little of that cigar lounge aesthetic.
9. Create some drama with deep rich colours such as black or dark grey paint for your walls. I am not a huge fan of feature walls but if done right they can be the only thing you need to transform the atmosphere of a room. Try sticking to one colour as a starting point and know that you can always paint over it. Textured wallpapers are also great alternatives and can be a feature in themselves without applying any artwork.
10. If you have a fireplace, I envy you. Try turning your furniture inward and around a fireplace instead of towards the TV. More talking with your family and less reality TV.
