Welcome the return of the quiff… It seems these days, to be suitably rock ’n roll, you really do need to get out the comb and strong hold hairspray. Makes sense though, I guess because the 80s truly are back with a vengeance. And if Gwen Stefani’s New York Spring 2010 show is anything to go by, we’re about to revisit the era for (at least) another season yet.
Bags in fluoro pink and lurid green were teamed with punky lace leggings, biker-inspired jackets and off-the-shoulder oversized tees at Stefani’s L.A.M.B show. All you need to pull off her urban look is plenty of ‘tude – and yes, some time on the exercise bike if you want to do those leggings justice.
Looking at this show makes me think of Helen Hunt in Girls Just Want To Have Fun. And while Gwen’s make-up and hair look is pretty out there, it is possible to turn it into something that’s more wearable. For the hair, take the top section of hair from the forehead to the top of the crown and backcomb using a fine-tooth comb (go as high as you dare). Next, brush over the top section to make it smooth on top and pull back the rest of your hair into a ponytail, then go mental with hairspray to keep the height, well, high.
Intrepid make-up junkies may want to follow Gwen’s lead and add opaque peacock blue shadow to their lids, but for me, I think I’ll just copy her luminous skin and natural pink lips – it’s such a nice departure from her pale matte complexion and red lip days. So nineties…
