The Accessories Report: Autumn 2010

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

By Jennifer Thorp

Seems everybody’s getting in on the accessories act. Luckily for you, Rescu. has the key to getting affordable versions of the newest, hottest accessories hot from the catwalk. Paying attention? Good.

The big topic of conversation at New York’s Fashion Week? Well, honestly, it was the event’s move to the Lincoln Centre next year – but a close second was the accessory extravaganza.

In important news for It-Bag fans, the new look is miniature. Oscar de la Renta had his models trot out with virtually doll-sized clutches. No more need for bags you could hide a laptop and Nicole Richie in. Want the look without having to mortgage your house?  This Portman’s clutch is a cute knock-off for night, and try out this Topshop tooled leather one for day.

The new look in sunglasses, as with so many looks, is retro. Even with the weather set to get a little chillier, Alexander Wang’s oversized cat’s-eye glasses are a very sweet, sexy way to protect yourself from that autumnal glare. Oroton does a damn decent Audrey Hepburn impersonation with their ‘Vacation’ sunglasses, but I’d also recommend checking out Etsy.com for a genuine vintage pair.

Bangles are still big, bulky and outrageous – but the new look, as demonstrated by Proenza Schouler, isn’t quite hippie, but more modern and space-age. Think lots of silver, by way of Barbarella. At Rescu. we’re in love with this Portman’s mesh bracelet. Pair it with the truly spectacular ‘Tomorrow’ bracelet at Mimco for a hardcore look that’s still feminine.

As for belts – well, studded, leather, chains, flowers, anything that can be wrapped around your waist or hips is currently on the catwalk. Witchery’s beautiful studded version is stunning, as is ESPRIT’s laid-back classic tooled version, but for a really interesting look, get hold of a necklace (like Mimco’s braided chain) or French Connection’s Chatterbox scarf, and wrap it around your waist for a curve-defining look.

Speaking of necklaces, if you saw Andre Leon Talley of American Vogue wandering around with a large tooth around his neck, you’ll know the latest look is grotesque. Statement doesn’t even cover this- think Damien Hirst, the dearly missed Alexander McQueen, Victorian lockets and all things sinister. Check out the fashionably morbid chokers at Diva or go searching for something from Alannah Hill’s Nervous Little Thing range. Topshop’s Bird On A Chain necklace adds a bit of weirdness to any outfit, as does the blood-inspired neck cuff at My Sugarland, one of the best original accessory stores on the planet.

Getting tired of shopping and want to put up your feet? All well and good. Just make sure they’re in a pair of women’s spectator-inspired shoes (with or without heels), and you’re in business!

Happy shopping!
