The cultured stars shone as bright as the lights at the 2014 Tony Awards last Sunday, hosted by fourth time master of ceremonies, Hugh Jackman. The night was off to a bouncy start with the seasoned broadway star bunny- hopping into the auditorium, high-fiving audience members on his way to the podium to announce the winners. Why? Who does it bother really, he’s Wolverine.
Now in its 68th year, the Tony Award’s once again paid homage to the best of Broadway. Some touching moments of the evening included Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston nabbing a Tony Award for best actor in a play for ‘All the Way’ in his broadway debut. Actress Audra McDonald also made history, winning her sixth Tony award as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. The actress wept as she accepted the honour and dedicated her win to Billie Holiday herself and women of music, expressing gratitude for “all the shoulders of the strong and brave and courageous women that I am standing on.”
As widely predicted, Neil Patrick Harris stole a Tony for his performance by a leading actor in a musical, for his spellbinding portrait of an East German transgender rocker in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, also named best revival of a musical. The former ‘How I met your mother’ star even gave the audience a taste of his character in a performance where her licked Samuel L. Jackson’s glasses and rubbed Orlando Bloom’s face in his pants, proving he really can get away with anything.
However, Jackman was not to be upstaged by NPH and closed the show by calling up the winners for a rendition of ‘On Broadway’. This went down better than his rapping of ‘The Music Man’ earlier in the nights proceedings. Yes, rapping. However he did enlist the help of hip hop stars LL cool J and TI who slipped into the shenanigans of the evening with grace.
