1. Awakening
By S.J. Bolton
One of the best thrillers I’ve read all year, Awakening is the truly spooky story of a young female vet who finds strange phenomena occurring in the small English village where she lives. Although it appears at first that the resolution to this eerie mystery must be supernatural, the evil-doers are entirely human – but no less scary for it.
Intriguing characters, a stirring love interest and a pressure-cooker atmosphere makes this a terrific beach read for crime lovers.

2. Poor Little Bitch Girl

You can’t go past Jackie Collins for a fun, trashy read. If you’re after something to pick up on your holiday that will keep you entertained, you’ll love Jackie’s latest Poor Little Bitch Girl.
The colourful cast includes some characters from previous books along with a philandering senator, a bitchy madame, movie stars and (of course) the heir to a Greek shipping fortune. All the characters are linked; through business, old friendships and when their paths cross, sparks will fly.

3. The Lacuna

There’s been a lot of great literature this year, but one novel that I particularly enjoyed was The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver, the author of The Poisonwood Bible.
A big novel in every sense of the word, it looks back over the Twentieth Century through the eyes of a young writer, taking in the movements in art, politics and society that shaped North America in this momentous century.
With characters ranging from Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera to Leon Trotsky, it’s a brilliant evocation of love, lust and life that is frustrating, beguiling and, ultimately, unforgettable.
