Dijanna Mulhearn is a true styling pro, with over 25 years experience in the fashion industry working with brands from Prada to Target, and styling some of Australia’s favourite celebrities.
The author of Wardrobe 101 is an expert on creating chic, multi-tasking wardrobes, so Rescu. asked for her top trans seasonal fashion tips to help you transition into winter in style.
RESCU: How can we keep our wardrobe fresh going into a new season, without having to start from scratch?
Dijanna Mulhearn: A few well placed accessories can make all the difference. Rather than commit to a new print or expensive fabrication work it in a great scarf, letting the scarf be the eye-catcher that updates a classic look.
Minimise your daily needs by using a modest clutch rather than a huge carry all. Shoes are another way to catapult a look into an on-trend statement. If you can only buy one thing in a season a clever shoe, whether a killer heel or a smart loafer, always turns heads.
RESCU: What are the top five key wardrobe staples that we should keep on hand all year round?
Dijanna Mulhearn: A navy blazer, an on-trend light weight scarf, flattering jeans, a graphic print tee shirt, a fresh pair of shoes.
RESCU: What are your top tips for introducing new trends into an existing wardrobe?
Dijanna Mulhearn: Whenever you introduce a new trend into your wardrobe make sure it is not completely foreign to you. If you are trying a new shape then do it in a colour that you understand or a neutral that will work with your existing pieces. If you are trying a new colour then make sure it is in a shape you are very comfortable with. Often the pieces in our wardrobe that we never wear are because both the shape and colour are new and we don’t know how to wear it with our other pieces.
RESCU: If we’re going to invest three fabulous trans seasonal pieces, what should they be?
Dijanna Mulhearn: A great quality, well cut collared button down shirt, a monochrome cropped jacket, a cozy cream chunky knit sweater.
RESCU: What are your top tips for re-imagining a summer look for the cooler seasons?
Dijanna Mulhearn: Swap your sandals for some high-top sneakers, pop a light, long-sleeved knit under your favourite t-shirt and swamp your favourite summer look with sumptuous cream oversized sweater or coat
RESCU: What are your three favourite trans seasonal fabrics that can carry us through the year in style?
Dijanna Mulhearn: My favourite fabrics are superfine cashmere, organic cotton jersey and denim. Each have a place in every wardrobe year round.
