Fashion is having a fairytales, princesses-in-castles moment – but it’s possible to pull it off with polish, not tulle and frills. Have a peek at RESCU’s magical wonderland of style….
It’s not just for Disney princesses any more. Fairytale inspired fashion is making it big – and Rescu. has all the pointers to incorporate it into your wardrobe without feeling five years old.
Film is the big inspiration here. From Snow White & The Huntsman, which featured amazing Colleen Atwood designs on the impeccable Charlize Theron, to the surreal extravagant fashion of Mirror Mirror, fashion is feeling the magic. So how to make it part of your wardrobe?
Rescu. is loving fairytale-inspired prints. It’s the easiest way to incorporate a little sparkle into your everyday wardrobe without overdosing on Disney.
Currently tiny prints of birds, clouds and sailboats are incredibly popular on short dresses and blouses, as are delicate olden-day florals. Look for whimsy which is balanced by a modern cut – a plain A-line or a shift.
Our favourites? The VB by Victoria Beckham ‘cloud’ shift, and the many bird and bee prints available on Modcloth.
Floaty chiffon and silk materials are the essence of fairytale fashion, and are easy to incorporate into a modern wardrobe with a bit of sleekness. Look for intriguing details – lace, for instance, or studs if you’re more like the Wicked Queen – on a floating shift or smock. Tie-die and ombre silks are a good way to feel ethereal while still looking up-to-date.
Corsetry is a big part of the fairytale aesthetic, and the Vivienne Westwood school of binding is on the right side of chic. We’re not talking Renaissance fair overt buckles and stays; opt for a structured bodysuit or a dress with inbuilt corsetry, to give shape and classicism without cheesiness.
A wide waist belt with delicate leather detailing is another option.
Peter Pan collars are an easy way to sample the feel of the moment, and aren’t ‘too young’ for anybody provided they’re accessorised correctly. A white Peter Pan collar on a dark blouse or dress is a sharp contrast and also an innocent accessory.
Slippers and Scheherezade-style decadent dressing gowns might be over-the-top, but Haider Ackermann’s brocade silk coat provides a guideline for those who want to look Arabian Nights-ish while out on the town. Dress it up with heels and a Tilda Swinton look and you’re chic without being wicked.
