June is Acne Awareness Month, a period dedicated to shedding light on one of the most common skin conditions affecting people of all ages. Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to various forms of blemishes, including blackheads, whiteheads, and more severe lesions like nodules and cysts. The condition begins in the pilosebaceous unit of the skin, which includes the hair follicle, hair shaft, and sebaceous gland. These glands produce sebum, an oily substance meant to protect the skin. However, when sebum production is excessive, it can lead to a build-up that causes blemishes.
Various factors contribute to acne production, including hormonal imbalances, diet, and environmental pollutants. Hormonal changes, particularly increases in androgens like testosterone and progesterone, can lead to overproduction of sebum. Externally, diets high in sugars and simple carbohydrates may exacerbate inflammation and in turn acne, while pollution introduces free radicals and toxins that inflame the skin.
We asked Dr. Sarah Tranter, a cosmetic physician based in Byron Bay, to share her clinical experience and insights into understanding and treating adult acne.
“When it comes to tackling adult acne, it’s crucial to understand what you’re dealing with as this can help guide you in terms of the right products and treatments,” says Dr. Tranter.
She shares that adult acne is not just a cosmetic concern but a significant factor affecting self-confidence. “As an aesthetic doctor, I see more adults than ever walking through my doors frustrated with breakouts they thought they’d left behind in their teens. Adult acne isn’t just a cosmetic concern—it’s a confidence crusher.”
Dr. Tranter highlights the importance of differentiating between types of acne to select appropriate treatments. Non-inflammatory acne, such as blackheads and whiteheads, requires calming the skin and unclogging pores. “Understanding the different types of acne can really help you select the right products and treatments – because if you know what’s causing the breakout you can be more selective with the solution.”
For inflammatory and cystic acne, which features red, tender, and swollen lesions, anti-inflammatory treatments are essential. “Anti-inflammatory treatments are very important with this type of acne, and I also recommend products that can help reduce post-inflammatory erythema (PIE) and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) – both consequences of ongoing inflammation in the skin and causes of acne scarring.”
It’s also crucial to remember that acne-prone skin needs hydration too. Light, hydrating ingredients that offer calming and soothing properties are essential for supporting skin barrier function and to speed up skin healing. IS CLINICAL Hydra-Cool Serum provides hydration support in the form of hyaluronic acid, plus brightening ingredients like Arbutin and calming Centella Asiatica. It also has anti microbial properties in the form of Polyporus Umbellatus Extract – a mushroom extract that is excellent against blemish-causing bacteria.
In severe cases, combining anti-inflammatory antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide, and retinoids with a consistent skincare routine can yield maximal effects. Additionally, in-clinic treatments such as enzyme-based facials, RF microneedling, or resurfacing laser treatments can enhance the healing process and improve acne scarring.
Additionally the issue of scarring is an important aspect of treating acne. Dr Davin Lim, a top rated Dermatologist based in Brisbane offers his specialist insights on the best technology to support treatment of acne scarring.
“With a range of different acne scar types, it is important to have a treatment plan that is tailored to the scar. This is why it’s important to select the best device for the patient. Two alternative devices that I use are the PicoSure Pro Picosecond laser and the Potenza RF Microneedling devices. The heat generated by the RF in the Potenza coagulates the tissue and stimulates the body’s natural healing process to stimulate healthy new collagen to form. Meanwhile the PicoSure Pro is able to effectively treat acne scars created by active acne as well as help correct any hyperpigmentation associated with it.”
