Be still our beating hearts, it’s almost that time of year again. Yes, Valentine’s Day falls next week, so if you think your beloved is still open to suggestion, it’s time to start dropping some not-so-subtle hints.
Firstly, tacky lingerie is obviously a no-no. Why anyone can think that red nylon with black lace says romance is beyond me. However, some lovely retro-inspired silky somethings might just be welcome. Perhaps something from French favourites Chantal Thomass or Fifi Chachnil (both available from Wheels & Doll Baby), while Sydney’s Nocturnal Designs has a great selection of European brands including Marlies Dekkers and Thomass (see nocturnaldesigns.com.au). Australia’s Pleasure State (pleasurestate.com) has some gorgeous designs, including cute polka dot designs and beautiful panelled lace pieces. Of course, if you fancy a more literal expression of amour, Tiffany & Co have their classic Elsa Peretti open heart pendants, from simplest sterling silver right through to platinum with diamonds. Georg Jensen has a similar heart design in either sterling silver or 18ct yellow gold. Of course, you can always just buy yourself a special treat—that way you’ll never be disappointed.

SAG Awards style
Glee star Naya Rivera shone in Perth designer Aurelio Costarella on the red carpet. The shimmering champagne-hued, hand-beaded sheath is a perfect complement to her golden skin. With this much shimmer going on, Rivera was right to keep accessories to a minimum, as this look has a lovely simplicity to it. Gorgeous.

Trousers are often a contentious choice for the red carpet, but Modern Family’s Julie Bowen showed us how it’s done in Catherine Malandrino. The wide-legged trousers are a more formal option while the plunge-front halterneck top adds a little sex appeal. The diamond jewellery adds glamour and polish, and the clips on the top balance the look out perfectly. She was right to wear black satin shoes, too, so that when they do peek out from beneath the trouser cuffs, they keep the look long.

Far removed from her costumes in True Grit, Hailee Steinfeld offered a perfectly age-appropriate look in this multicolour striped dress by Prada. The clean hair and make-up and virtually no jewellery and just a lick of pink nail polish hit the right note for the 14-year-old star. The licorice allsorts look is nothing if not sweet.
