Since the Venice Film Festival winds up on Saturday, we thought we’d check out some filmic goss. Read on to find out which is pegged as the film to beat in Venice and which teen star shocked us as a glamour girl on the red carpet. The host for the 2012 Oscars has been announced and there is already speculation about nominations! We check it out.
Venice Film Festival
Among the films to premiere at Venice was Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy. The film is based on the John Le Carre novel of the same name and has been pinned as a festival favourite with many critics, including Xan Brooks of the Guardian, calling it the film to beat. Colin Firth, who both won the Oscar for The King’s Speech and was nominated for A Single Man, plays a supporting role in the film alongside lead Gary Oldman. We can’t wait to check out the film but don’t hold your breath, unlike other films that dash from Venice to quickly premiere around the world, this one is slowly rolling out across Europe and even America will have to wait until December to see it!
Skins Star Shines
Kaya Scodelario, who played teen hot-mess Effy in the UK series Skins, shocked us all when she showed up on the red carpet in Venice looking far more ‘hot’ than ‘mess’. The 19-year-old was stunning beyond her years in a elegant cream lace dress with picture perfect red lips for the premiere of Wuthering Heights in which Scodelario plays Cathy.
At the photo call she nailed it again in a fitted teal mini and some sky-high heels. We think Scodelario has the makings of an it girl and we’ll certainly be keeping a firm eye on the British beauty.
Academy Awards Host
It’s still almost six months until the Academy Awards but already the event, which will be in its 84th year, is being talked about.
This week Eddie Murphy was confirmed as the host of the February event, shocking us all. Rumour has it the choice was made as an attempt to inject some much needed humour into the night after James Franco and Anne Hathaway were not so well received this year. It’s a strange choice but maybe it will work. Murphy is naturally thrilled, saying, “I am enormously honoured to join the great list of past Academy Award hosts from Hope and Carson to Crystal, Martin and Goldberg, among others.”
Oscars Predictions
The Toronto International Film Festival is a little like the Oscars litmus test; films that have had a wonderful response there (such as The King’s Speech, Precious, Eastern Promises and Slumdog Millionaire) have been similarly well received at the Oscars. Now that the TIFF lineup has been announced, punters are making predictions about Oscar possibilities. So far George Clooney’s two films The Ideas of March and The Descendants, Brad Pitt’s Moneyball, Ryan Gosling’s Drive and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s 50/50 are being pegged as possibilities for Best Actor. Best Actress could go to Keira Knightley for A Dangerous Method, Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs or even Jennifer Garner for Butter.
