Victoria Beckham was honoured at the British Fashion Awards yesterday with fellow designer heavyweights Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney and more in the crowd.
Over in New York, the Gotham Independent Film Awards took place, marking the beginning of award season. Read on for the details from the red carpet and to find out which two films tied for the Best Feature honour.
British Fashion Award for Beckham
Back in the days of the Spice Girls we never would have guess that Posh Spice, now known as Victoria Beckham, would be taking over the fashion world. But yesterday the star proved just that when she was awarded Brand of the Year at the British Fashion Awards by none other than Marc Jacobs.
In her speech, Beckham counted business partner Simon Fuller and her team as well as her parents, kids and husband, saying, “Without David I wouldn’t have had the courage to do what I am doing.”
In a rare show of emotion, the star told the Daily Mail, “I was really trying to keep it together in the speech without bursting out crying.”
Though David couldn’t be there on the night due to commitments with the LA Galaxy soccer team, he took to his Facebook page to say, “The boys and I are incredibly proud of Victoria after winning a prestigious British Fashion Award tonight. She has worked so hard and deserves all the recognition. It’s amazing what she has achieved tonight, very special.”
Other winners included Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Christopher Kane and Kim Jones. Alexa Chung took out the publically voted British style award.
Gotham Independent Film Awards
Now in their 21st year, the annual Gotham Independent Film Awards took place at Cipriani Wall Street, playing host to a bevy of celebs and awarding more than a few films tipped to be Oscar winners.
The star of the red carpet was the divine Elizabeth Olsen who wore a stunning gold Valentino gown. The younger Olsen sister was there as she was nominated in the best breakthrough actor category for her role in Martha Marcy May Marlene but she lost out to Felicity Jones who was awarded for her Like Crazy performance.
Charlize Theron showed she is still a red carpet favourite in a revealing black and white Gucci dress as she accepted a Gotham Tribute. Actor-comedian Patton Oswalt introduced Charlize to the stage, making jokes about his height, saying, “I feel like you’re accepting me for the award,” to which Charlize jokingly replied, “The irony is that you are the award.” The pair star in an upcoming black comedy titled Young Adult written by Diablo Cody.
The best feature award had the unprecedented result of a tie this year with The Tree of Life and Beginners sharing the award. Tilda Swinton introduced the nominees before turning over to jury member Natalie Portman who appeared on screens in a pre-recorded video that explained how she and the other judges were stuck when it came to selecting a winner so they, “made a bold and independent decision” to “choose to honour both.”
Since its beginnings the Gotham Film Awards have tipped us off to the Oscar winners, including 2008’s Best Picture ‘The Hurt Locker’ so we’re interested to see if either of these films will be taking out the Oscar in February.
