An incredible spectacle of light, music and ideas, Vivid Sydney shows off the city at its absolute best. If the 800,000 visitors who attended the festival last year are anything to go by, the festival is a true favourite for locals and tourists alike, and Vivid Sydney 2014 is set to be bigger than ever.
In case you’ve missed the first five years, Vivid is a mesmerising free public exhibition of outdoor lighting sculptures and installations. Vivid Sydney 2014 also including a cutting-edge contemporary music program and ideas exchange. The highlight of the festival, is of course the spectacular illumination of Sydney’s iconic architecture including our much loved Sydney Opera House. The traditional lighting of the MCA, Customs House, Circular Quay and the Sydney Harbour Bridge will also be returning this year.
The 18 day festival, named Australia’s Event of the Year in 2013, will run in 2014 from May 23rd to June 9th.
‘Every year Vivid Sydney brings something new, bigger and brighter to wow the hundreds of thousands of people who come to see the event,’ says NSW Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner. ‘Vivid Sydney 2014 promises to be nothing short of amazing, with creative industries events, eclectic music performances and spectacular light displays that will transform Sydney’s harbour foreshore and surrounds.’
This year the harbour will join in like never before, with ferries and vessels decked out in LED lights illuminating the water. The festival will also extend its reach to Martin Place, Carriageworks, the Seymour Centre, Sydney University and The Basement, with music and lighting content right across the centre of Sydney. Electronic music artists Pet Shop Boys will be performing three concerts at Carriageworks as part of a new event, Modulations, curated by Steven Pavlovic.
Darling Harbour will be transformed into a spectacular water show with fountains, water jets and lasers, as Aquatique, the French pioneers of dancing fountains, return to Vivid for the second year.
Vivid Music and Vivid Ideas are also expanding in 2014. The musical line up will include Timeline, a special collaboration between the Australian Chamber Orchestra and electro-pop duo The Presets, which will present the history of music in two hours. ‘With a strong role to play in showcasing our creative industries to the world, the Vivid Ideas program has also expanded,’ says Mr Stoner. ‘The Vivid Ideas Exchange on Level 6 of the MCA is once again at the heart of the program, this year featuring creative ideas, public talks, industry seminars, conferences, workshops and debates.’
