What Does Soulset Mean and How Can We Practice It?

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Pinterest

We are all searching. Searching for the next big thing to work on. Searching for a balanced mindset, heartset and our soulset.

You’re probably wondering what soulset means. Believe it or not, your soulset is one of the most important elements in your life and wellbeing.

By Yogita Ridgley, CEO and Founder of Traveling with Me, Myself and I

Think of your soulset a bit like love. You can’t see it, but you can feel it. Love is the language of our souls and it is so important to incorporate this into our lives. Love is what connects us to others, and ourselves. Your soulset is what teaches you how to love yourself, know yourself –  and know your worth.

Health and wellness isn’t just a surface level thing. It goes so much deeper. Soulset is within. Without a healthy soulset, you feel lost, disconnected and unhappy. Here’s how to turn that around, by boosting your soulet.

Get out of your comfort zone

No one ever had fun staying between the lines. If you are in a position where you can jet-set off, by all means, do so. I guarantee you won’t regret it. You’ll learn. You’ll be pushed into self-discovery. Solo travel helps connect you to your purpose and our inner self. Voila, soulset!

For some of us solo travel isn’t in our budget or mind frame, and that’s ok. Something as simple as going out for lunch alone, walking along the beach alone, or complimenting a stranger can completely push you out of your comfort zone and help you, find you. People with healthy soul sets are in tune with who they are. There is no better way to discover who you really are than by pushing yourself outside your comfort zone!

Stop and smell the roses

We live such busy lives – we often forget to be in the moment. Appreciate a special, happy or exhilarating moment. Be present. Your soul will thank you. For those struggling, meditation can make a huge difference, keeping you centred and grounded. Try a medication class, the benefits are game-changing.

Really, what we’re talking about is mindfulness. This is a bit of a buzzword at the moment, so let’s unpack it. A recent paper published through the American National Institute of Health confirms the increasingly popular opinion that mindfulness is potently powerful. The study concludes that mindfulness, that is the psychological discipline of being in the present, has a range of positive effects. Two of these include emotional and behavioural regulation. These are key to finding a healthy soulset.

Mindfulness, or ‘stopping and smelling the roses’ leads to thinking, feeling and acting in a balanced, and authentic way.

Just be nice

When you’ve got a good soulset, you have a good outlook on your life and yourself. You feel fulfilled and purpose-driven. The best way to fast track this process? Giving to others.

Generosity is one of the most rewarding things in life. It’s often a gift to give. By incorporating acts of generosity into your life, you’ll feel more connected to other people and to your own purpose. That’s key to a healthy soulset.

To kick you off on this habit of kindness, here are five things to try this week, for the sake of your soulset:

  1. Give someone a compliment. Be genuine. And, expect nothing in return.
  2. Increase your charitable giving. Look at your budget and find room to give more. I promise, participating in a good cause which stirs your passion is a great way to improve your soulset.
  3. Listen. Ironically, if you stop focusing so much on yourself –  you’ll end up being a healthier self. Next conversation you have, try to really focus on what the other person is saying. What do they need? What is their story?
  4. Don’t act out of frustration. When you feel tempted to snap or gossip, take five minutes to cool off before you act. Healthy souls act slowly, out of thoughtfulness – not anger.
  5. Reach out to someone. There is someone in your life who is lonely. They could hugely benefit from a phone call or a coffee date. Who are they? Get in touch with them this week – and feel your soulset grow toward health.

Talk to yourself with love

Positive self-talk is so important. It can truly change everything; your relationships, your work, your hobbies. The relationship you have with yourself sets the foundation of your life, so why not make it a positive one? A thriving soulset grows from a place of self-acceptance and kindness.

Research shows that it is possible to turn negative self-talk into positive self-talk, with a little practice. The first trick is awareness. Start to notice when you are talking to yourself negatively. Perhaps it’s when you’re standing in front of the mirror or when you didn’t quite make it through your to-do list. Then, you need to think about the reality of the situation. Are you really a failure because you forgot to send that email, or is it normal to make mistakes? Is your dress size your identity or are there plenty of other wonderful things about you?

Push yourself to consider the facts. Then, put a positive spin on it. Most of the time, this means adopting a ‘growth mindset’. ‘I will improve’, ‘I’m not perfect but change is possible, ‘I just need to work out a solution for this problem’. That’s what positive self-talk sounds like when it’s focussed on growth. And, it’s what a healthy soulset is made of.
