Are you eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables every day? If you shook your head and felt guilty, you are not alone. A recent survey by Australian brand HERRON Pharmaceuticals found 42 percent of us don’t reach our recommended daily quota, which may be putting our health and wellbeing in serious jeopardy.
As part of the study, conducted in August 2009, HERRON asked 1,000 Australians nationwide to disclose their eating habits and love (or not) of fruits and vegetables.
And the survey revealed…
The top five reasons why Australians don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables are:
1. Lack of forethought in planning diets to include fruits and vegetables (42%)
2. Prefer to eat other foods when hungry (27%)
3. Distinct lack of cravings for fruits and vegetables (27%)
4. Boredom over eating the same fruits and vegetables all the time (22%)
5. Fruits and vegetables are too expensive (15%)
Shane Hunter, HERRON’s Brand Manager, says, “As an Australian owned and operated company; we can identify with and understand every one of these challenges. In addition to these results, the study also revealed that one in 10 Aussies don’t eat any fruits and vegetables at all, which is of huge concern”.
How the generations compare
The study identified female Gen Ys, widely regarded as the most body conscious demographic, as the group who eat the least amount of fruits and vegetables. And men aged 65+ as the most meticulous fruit and vegetable eaters, with more than 54% of this demographic saying they diligently ensure they eat enough fruits and vegies every day.
