While most of the judges would wax lyrical about how training a singing star and discovering the next big thing is the aim of their game as a judge on The Voice Australia, Will.i.am was a little more frank about his prerogative in signing up for the gig… and it’s anything but selfless.

The ever-entertaining judge told Switched On, “I wanted to come on the show because I have a label, through Universal, and it’s a great fishing pond, if you will, to find artists. And I noticed very few people who join these competitions come out to actually have careers.”
As will.i.am continued to explain how big a part politics are at play in giving an artist a real shot at a career, he became more and more candid about his thoughts on the reality show’s format and how the winner is ultimately chosen…
“It’s typical TV. They rarely vote for the person with the best voice. It isn’t really the best voice that wins, even though the show is called The Voice. There is something sentimental, tugging on emotion, or people gravitate to that personality that factors in on why someone wins. Although the beginning of the show is about the voice, the end of the show is always up for people’s vote via emotions.”
Only time will tell whether will.i.am pulls any of The Voice contestants for his own label, but for now we’re still addicted to watching the hopefuls fight it out and, yes, we’re falling for the personalities line, hook, and sinker…
