Did you know that over 14 million Australians are overweight, and in 2012 we were named as one of the fattest nations in the developed world?
In an attempt to counteract these shocking statistics Australian fitness guru and BUPA health ambassador Guy Leech will stage a world record attempt on Manly Beach for the biggest fitness circuit class ever held. The best bit? Everyone’s invited to take part.
Aussie celebrities including Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickinson, surfing legend Layne Beachley and Olympian Kerry Pottharst will support ‘Leechy’ at the free event, which hopes to attract over 1,500 fitness fanatics.
The current record is 1,165, which was held in Melbourne in early 2012. [Breaking news: Guy Leech has already broken the record prior to the event with registrations currently sitting at just over 1300!]
There will be 10 stations set up across the beach, with two personal trainers at each one to keep you motivated during the 30-minute fitness class. All fitness levels are encouraged to attend.
Donations on the day will go to Sydney charity Bear Cottage, which is the only children’s hospice in New South Wales.
We spoke to the man himself to get some fitness tips to help you prepare for the record-breaking attempt.
RESCU: How can you train as a couple?
Guy Leech: Firstly, any exercise you do with someone else is great because it helps make it fun & keeps you motivated. Lifting weights with a partner is always good because they can help with those last few rotations to get the most out of the workout. Boxing training is great with a partner.
RESCU: Can you give us some last minute training tips before the big day?
Guy Leech: 30 minutes of exercise each day leading into the event would be good. Take Friday off from training so you have some energy stored up for Saturday’s event – remember though that the workout is as hard as you want to make it!
RESCU: How about some last-minute healthy eating for added power and energy?
Guy Leech: 2/3 pieces of fruit a day & 4/5 pieces of vegetables is a good start. Limit alcohol, particularly a few days out.
