Beauty is personal, but globally, it’s also big business. Every year, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) releases the definitive survey of surgical and non-surgical procedures worldwide. It offers a data-rich portrait of what we’re doing to our faces and bodies, and perhaps more importantly, why.
In 2024, nearly 38 million aesthetic procedures were performed globally. Yes, beauty is booming. But this year’s numbers aren’t just high. They’re revealing.
Let’s unpack what’s rising, what’s fading, and what it means for the women (and men) shaping the future of beauty.
Billions at Stake, Millimetres at a Time
While the overall number of procedures dipped slightly (down 4.8% compared to 2023), the total volume remains staggering:
- 17.4 million surgical
- 20.5 million non-surgical
Non-surgical treatments now account for more than half of all procedures globally. The face of beauty is changing, and not always with a scalpel.
The top five non-surgical treatments worldwide were:
- Botulinum Toxin – 7.88 million treatments
- Hyaluronic Acid Fillers – 6.33 million
- Hair Removal – 1.49 million
- Skin Tightening (non-surgical) – 1.24 million (up 38.9%)
- Chemical Peels – 820,000 (up 33.3%)
While Botulinum Toxin use dropped by 17%, demand for skin-tightening and peels surged. Women are chasing youth, but with less volume and more skin strategy.
The Face Is Still the Focus
Globally, the most performed surgical procedure was eyelid surgery, which overtook liposuction for the first time. With 2.1 million procedures (up 13.4%), it’s a quietly transformative treatment with cultural resonance, especially across Asia and Latin America.
Also rising:
- Facelifts increased 7.4%
- Fat grafting to the face jumped 19.2%
- Brow lifts soared by 27.5%
The theme is refined, harmonious rejuvenation. Contour is back, but it’s elegant. Volume is wanted, but applied with care.
The Body’s Still in the Game, But Tastes Are Shifting
Liposuction remains the top body procedure, with more than 2 million treatments. However, it declined by 12.6% this year. Semaglutide and body-contouring tech are clearly reshaping the fat loss conversation.
Both breast augmentations and buttock augmentations declined sharply: 17.5% and 21.5% respectively. Exaggerated silhouettes appear to be softening, culturally and aesthetically.
Scar revision entered the top five surgeries for the first time, with 1.15 million cases. Real skin concerns are being addressed with medical precision rather than only cosmetic aspiration.
Age Is Just a Number, But the Data Speaks
Botulinum toxin was the most common procedure across every adult age group from 18 to 65+. However, there are generational nuances:
- Under 18s most commonly seek rhinoplasty
- Ages 18–34 are fuelling injectable trends
- Over 50s are embracing facial surgery and tightening tech
Who’s Leading the Charge?
- The United States performed the most non-surgical treatments
- Brazil led globally in surgical procedures
- Japan recorded the highest uptake in eyelid surgeries
- Australia, though smaller in scale, ranks among the highest per capita. Our market is educated, discerning, and climate-affected
Globally, 80 percent of plastic surgeons now specialise in aesthetic procedures, rather than reconstructive work. This confirms how deeply embedded aesthetic wellness is becoming in modern life.
